TEMA STEEL COMPANY (FORMERLY GIHOC STEEL)

Tema Steel Company Limited (TSCL) took over the assets of the erstwhile GIHOC Steel Works Limited which was liquidated under the Divestiture Implementation Programme of Ghana. Initially a joint venture agreement company, TSCL us now wholly owned by private investor, Kitjat Holdings Inc.

The company manufactures steel products for the construction and engineering industries. Its broad objective is to actively participate in the economic development of Ghana and in turn do mutually rewarding business.To achieve this, research and development activities have been pursued with an innovative approach considering the needs of the company based on the market study. “SWOT” analysis and longevity of the organization.

This has resulted in Achievement of greater levels of production;

Extension of the product range of rolling mills;

•  And development of:
•  High tensile reinforcing bars;
•  Medium alumina refectories:
•  Various castings;
•  Grinding media;
•  Redesigning of 21in. and 12in. rolling mills
•  Re-heating furnaces;
•  New methods of melting

Tema Steel Company Limited believes in human resource development. Employee training is a regular feature. On the job training is one of the main factors which has contributed to the company's performance. This is complemented by the improved service conditions. Since its divestiture, employment at TSCL has shot up to 6002 and minimum take-home pay employees has increased over fourteen fold.

The company expanded the Cast Iron Foundry division with an additional capital expenditure of about US$!.5m in 2003 to further boost production. TSCL has regularly contributed to the national kitty with the company paying almost ¢29 billion in various taxes last year.

IMPACT ON SOCIETY
CLEANER ENVIRONMENT

Through effective collection and successful recycling of scrap, which hitherto littered the country, the company has helped and continues to assist in the creation of a cleaner national environment.

ENVIRONMENTAL PRESERVATION

By making iron rods readily available to the construction sector at competitive prices, the company has contributed significantly to reducing reliance on wood for building and has thus helped, and continues to support substantially, the slowing down of the degradation of our ecology.

FOREIGN EXCHANGE SAVINGS AND EARNINGS

The company has contributed to society by saving valuable foreign exchange through reduction of steel imports as well as by earning foreign exchange through exports.

INDIRECT EMPLOYMENT

The company has generated booming economic activities in areas like:
Transportation and haulage;
Scrap collection;

Businessmen who, through their private initiative and enterprise, export locally manufacture steel products. Conservatively estimated therefore, for every one person directly employed by the steel industry, 10 people are indirectly employed as a result of economic activities generated by the sector.
